Plant Vogtle officials issued an alert at noon today involving Units 1&2 in Burke County.
The alert has been terminated, according to Georgia Power and did not threaten public safety.
“The alert was was originally declared as part of our response process due to a small equipment fire-related to a transformer outside of the nuclear part of the plant, which was fully extinguished quickly. There was no danger to the plant or the public at anyt time and all united continue to operate at full power,” according to a news release.
Plant Vogtle Initial Statement When Alert was Issued
“An alert means an event has occurred that could reduce the plant’s level of safety. There should be no danger to the public,” according to a news release from Georgia Power.
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) as well as state and local agencies were notified of the declaration. Among the four categories designated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission an Alert is the second least serious.
County and state officials are also involved. Georgia Power officials say the public does not need to take any actions unless directed to do so by state and local officials.
“Our top priority is the safety and health of the public and our employees,” said Plant Vogtle 1&2 Site Vice President John Weissinger. “We will provide more details as soon as they are available, and we will continue to do so until this situation is safely resolved,” he said.
