Is Retirement Out Of The Question For You
It’s a topic we discuss often on the morning show, is retirement out of the question for you?
We discuss it on the show for a variety of reasons, one, we’re both in our 60’s and it crosses our minds often. Many of our listeners are either retired or getting close to retiring. It’s an important hot topic.
A recent study on retirement
Mass Mutual recently did a study, and it found that about 20% of Americans have no plans to retire. Ever.
Let’s dig into it. For many of us, when tackling this topic, money comes up quick. Will you have enough? Are you currently saving enough? How much is enough? The study showed many of us aren’t ready financially.
Another thing that comes up, health care. We’re scared of losing our employer-sponsored health care coverage. More than 20% of us don’t have emergency funds to cover medical expenses.
Let’s look at it differently, there’s nothing that says you must retire at any age. Many of us are still enjoying our careers. We like challenges, we like the people. Will we be bored in retirement? Will we not be as social? If you don’t like your job, there’s always the opportunity to do something else.
Is it a bad thing if we never retire? We’ve all heard the stories. Pretty much all of us know someone that unfortunately, immediately after retiring, dies. Had they kept working, kept busy and productive, would that have been the case? I have no idea, and neither do you.
In the end, it’s a personal decision. Have you properly prepared yourself for retirement, financially, emotionally? Is it something you’re looking forward to or is it something you’re dreading? How’s your health? Also, something to consider.
As far as we’re concerned on the morning show, we’re still wondering and debating. We love what we do, although the hours are a bit tough as we get older. We’ll see as we move forward. We’re taking it day by day. How about you?
