Deadly Ambulance Crash in Aiken Saturday
A deadly ambulance crash in Aiken late Saturday night claimed one life.
The two-vehicle accident was reported at 10:30 pm on Richland Avenue W. near Augusta Road.
The Aiken County Coroner’s Office says a 2013 Dodge Charger was headed east on Richland Avenue, while the ambulance was traveling west.
The ambulance driver was in the process of turning onto Augusta Road when the truck crashed into the back of it.
The Aiken man that crashed into the ambulance was identified as 20-year-old Alonzo Carter. Coroner Darryl Ables said Carter was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy will be performed in Newberry.
No Patients were Being Transported at the Time of the Crash
Although they were no patients in the ambulance at the time of the crash, the crew was taken to Aiken Regional Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.
The Coroner’s Office, Aiken County Sheriff’s Office and the Aiken Department of Public Safety are continuing with their investigation.
Not the First Fatal Accident This Year Involving an Ambulance in Aiken County
The deadly ambulance crash in Aiken Saturday was not the first to involve one of the county’s ambulances this month. A three vehicle crash involving an ambulance March 1 on Hitchcock Parkway in Aiken claimed the life of an Aiken County man.
A car driven by 33-year-old Isaiah Johnson crossed the centerline and hit the EMS unit at Northwood Drive. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene. A patient in the ambulance and the driver were taken to an area hospital for treatment of their injuries. A third vehicle was also involved in the crash and the two occupants of that vehicle were also treated for injuries.
At least 14 people have lost their lives in traffic accidents in Aiken County since the beginning of 2024. That compares with 38 deaths reported during the entire year in 2023. Traffic accidents in South Carolina have claimed 193 lives so far this year.
