Christmas Sweaters – My Look For The Season
I am not one to wear Christmas sweaters. Nothing against it, I’ve just never been very “crafty” and I’ve found that most Christmas sweater people are creative in that way. Most of my “crafts” end up looking like a six year old made them, so I spare the world of looking at my ugly projects by not making them in the first place!
Sugarplums and Fairytales
My mom is the exact opposite. She loves themed sweaters and shirts of any kind, but particularly the Christmas sweater. In fact she loves them so much she has about 15 of them. All sparkles and snowflakes and candy canes, you name it, she has the Christmas sweater for it! A few years ago my son and I raided her collection of sweaters and inadvertently hurt her feelings when we told her we were going to an Ugly Christmas Sweater party. She pouted and informed us that HER sweaters were pretty, so we’d have to look somewhere else!
I’m More Pragmatic
Now it’s 2023 and boy, has it been a crazy year! Part of me just wants to blast though the next couple of weeks and get this stupid year over with! But that’s when my mom steps in and reminds me, every day is a gift and we have to cherish it while we have it. The Monday after Thanksgiving I was looking for something to wear and remembered the Christmas sweater collection and helped myself to a sparkly monstrosity, somewhat ironically.
When I walked into my mom’s room wearing the sweater she absolutely lit up the room beaming over it. To be honest, that moment shamed me a little bit. I was kind of being a jerk in wearing that silly bedazzled sweater and yet such a simple thing had made her so over the moon happy. What a cretin I am, Christmas is supposed to be about happy, frivolous, joyful things and I knew right then I needed to get with the program.
Christmas Sweaters – Understanding The Assignment
Over the course of the last few weeks I have worn a different Christmas sweater to work every day. What started out as an ironic inside joke has become a little bit of a love letter to my mom. In some ways, my mom and I could not be any more different. She is a person who literally wakes up smiling. I have to have a few cups of coffee before I can even think about anything worth smiling about.
She seems to find joy in even the simplest of things. When I make her a cup of coffee, you would think I grew the coffee beans myself and roasted them especially for her. When she came home from the hospital after her back surgery a few months ago she was so grateful to be home she praised my cooking, even though I’m certain it was mediocre at best. I can only indulge myself in so much self-deception on a given day and I know I’m not a very good cook. And yet, she remains ever grateful for my pathetic attempts at caregiving.
So, while I’m fully aware that I may look silly over the next few weeks in all my sparkly gear, if you see me looking especially Christmas-y just smile and wave. I’m doing it for my momma.
