Is Tim Scott Just Too Nice For Us?
On “Sunday night in America with Trey Gowdy” Presidential hopeful Tim Scott announced he was suspending his campaign. While many pundits have been calling for the candidates on the lower end of the field to drop out in recent days, Scott’s announcement seemed to catch everyone by surprise. That includes his longtime friend Trey Gowdy.
A Tough Fight
Scott had been facing an uphill battle for months and just never seemed to gain any traction despite his hope filled message and positive ideas for the future of the country. During debates it seemed he even struggled to be “tough” with his fellow candidates. Even his announcement of the decision to suspend the campaign was delivered with the cheerful promise of “Not now”.
We Can Do Better
Politics is an ugly business, always has been. But doesn’t it feel like the ugliness has taken a center stage in the last few years. And the more rough and rude a candidate is with their rivals the more we seem to cheer them on? What does it say about our political sphere? We can’t even seem to disagree on important topics without tearing each other down on a personal level. Donald Trump didn’t even have to be on the stage for any of the debates for his presence to be felt. And I’m not sure we’re any better for it.
An Optimistic Prospect
With today being National Kindness Day, maybe we can take a page out of Tim Scott’s book. Let’s find the positive direction to take our national political conversation. If we look hard enough, we might even find something worth being hopeful for.
