The Best And Worst Days To Travel This Holiday Season
When it comes to getting out of town this time of year, we’ve found the best and worst days to travel this holiday season.
For years, we celebrated Thanksgiving like everyone else, with a whole lot of food on Thursday which was followed by three days of recovery. Every year I would see and hear the stories about traveling over the holiday and every year would say to myself, “glad that’s not me”.
All of that changed three years ago when my daughter and her husband moved to Richmond, Virginia so that she could pursue her fellowship in pulmonology. It really isn’t that far a drive, between six and seven hours. So, off we went. We had a wonderful time and then proceeded to get in the car early Sunday morning for the drive back down I-95 then I-20 for home. Somewhere in North Carolina it got crazy. I watched the GPS arrival time continue to change and get farther away. This was not going to be a six-to-seven-hour ride home. When we finally arrived home, after about eight hours on the road, I swore “never again”.
This Thanksgiving, we’ll be making our third trip to Richmond…because it’s your daughter and Thanksgiving…you know. It’s just what you do. It also allows us our annual stops at Buc-ee’s and Cracker Barrel.
Would you ever consider traveling on Thanksgiving Day?
Now that’s all driving, no flights. We did a story on the air this morning about the best days and times to travel over the holiday season. 83% more people flew on the Sunday following Thanksgiving than on Thanksgiving Day. The second busiest day at the airport is the day BEFORE Thanksgiving.
Christmas is trickier because it falls on different days each year. This year, Christmas falls on a Monday. Fridays are always busy days at the airport but this year, Friday, December 23rd, you can expect a huge crowd and higher fares. One of the recommendations, if you’re able to, is to stay longer. Fly out the Monday or Tuesday BEFORE Christmas and come back a few days after Christmas…maybe on the 28th or 29th.
Wherever you’re going, whenever you’re going, please remember to pack your patience. Whether you’re traveling by air or road, the trip will be what you make it. Be safe and enjoy.
