Celebrating A Beloved Game – John Patrick Talks Golf For National Golf Lover’s Day
It’s National Golf Lover’s Day! And if you know me at all, you know how much I love the game. I even, sixteen years ago, decided to add more to my plate and created a one hour, weekly, radio golf show. I don’t know what I was thinking.
For The Love Of The Game
Here’s the thing, the game has brought me more joy than I could have ever imagined. Some of my closest and dearest friends are in my life because of the game.
You should know that I’ve had the pleasure of playing all of the courses displayed by the photographs in this story.
I’ll tell you a little story. In my previous life, as a “disc jockey”, Lisa and I had numerous opportunities to go to concerts, go backstage, meet various artists and have experiences that very few people ever have. We did NOT take them for granted and appreciated every opportunity. But, since I started doing the radio golf show, and my circles of friendship have involved people associated with the game, she has said to me, as much as she enjoyed the concerts and that life, the people involved with the game that I’ve introduced her to, have been some of the best people she’s ever met. The game attracts wonderful people. It’s a humbling game, it beats you up at every level and if you love playing it, you’re a special kind of human being.
Places To Play
I’ve also been blessed by WHERE I’ve had the opportunity to play the game. Living here, with the golf club that exists in our town, is different. I’ve had the opportunity to play Augusta National on a lot of occasions. I never take it for granted.
There are also various lists of “the best courses in the country”. I’ve been blessed to play many that reside in the top ten of many of those lists. Each time, it’s memorable and enjoyable and something I will never forget.
But as corny as this sounds, in the end, for me, it’s about the people I’ve met along this journey. Some are now my closest friends. Some are just acquaintances; some are people I’ll probably never see again but I’ve enjoyed every time I’ve had the chance to be around them.
I’m a firm believer in getting kids involved in golf. There are so many life lessons to be learned by spending time with people on golf courses. You learn a lot about someone when you spend four hours with them playing golf. Kids that fall in love with the game will get so much more out of it than they give it.
Thank you for allowing me to ramble on about the game I love. I’m hoping that if you’re reading this, that you love it too. And if you do, I’m hoping our paths will cross one day… on a golf course.
Happy National Golf Lover’s Day!
