History Of Henry H. Brigham Community Center
The original Henry H. Brigham Community Center was built in the 1990s. It featured a gym, natatorium, and fitness center, and also served as a senior and community center and park. Henry H. Brigham Park is one of Richmond County’s highest-used community parks.
The park and community center were named after former County Commissioner Henry H. Brigham II. He served on the Augusta Commission from 1986 to 2001. He also served in the Air Force and worked as a teacher, counselor, and public school principal with the Richmond County Board of Education.
According to The Augusta Chronicle, the renovation of the center was part of the Sales Tax 7 project dating back to 2019 when the Augusta Commission allocated $6 million.
Bids were sent out for the renovation, but all came in over the $6 million allocated. Additional bids were sent out but still came in over the allocated amount. Eventually, it was decided the Sales Tax 7 funds and $1.6 million from American Rescue Plan funds would be used for the project. With the cost of construction materials, supply chain issues, and inflation, the efforts to get lower bids were unsuccessful.
