This Is Under Construction
Why not? Everything else in this town is under construction.
Construction frustration. I think it might be the real thing.
I-20 Is Still Under Construction
Let’s start with a story that made news this morning. The work on I-20 on the border. The project over the Savannah River has taken nearly five years and there’s still a few months left.
The GDOT has admitted the project has taken longer than they ever expected. This time last year, they thought they’d be done, January 2024. Then they thought May, then June. Here it is August and we’re now hearing late September or early October.
The problems were many. Construction during live traffic. Weather. COVID. Supply chain issues, of course.
When completed the $73 million dollar project will widen I-20, add an extra lane and wide shoulders.
Downtown Is Under Construction
That’s there, don’t even get me started on downtown Augusta. Let me say, that I am a huge fan of progress. I love infrastructure. I love the detailed work that goes into projects to make them glorious on a grand scale.
My complaint, does it all have to be done at the same time?
The number of jobs currently taking place in downtown Augusta is too numerous to mention. There are some sites that look abandoned. It appears that work was started, but then for some reason it stopped and hasn’t picked up again. Have you driven down Greene Street in the Old Town neighborhood recently? Oh wait! You haven’t because you can’t! We live on Broad Street in Old Town and used to use Greene Street often but not anymore.
As a matter of fact, there used to be a lot of streets I would use downtown but can’t anymore. The most frustrating situation, and I’m being serious when I tell you this has happened, is finally creating a way home without any disruptions, until the next day! The way you went home yesterday is no longer available.
Again, I’m a huge fan of progress and when completed I hope it all looks spectacular and makes navigating downtown easier and more enjoyable.
I just hope I live long enough to see it!
