Georgia’s Rival In Columbia Has A New “Live” Mascot Name
When Georgia and South Carolina play each other in Columbia in a few weeks, you’ll notice a name change for the Gamecocks “live” mascot. There was a dispute between the bird’s former owners and current owners.
According to The Post and Courier, the old owners used to trim the rooster’s com to make it look more like a bird bred for fighting (aka, a “gamecock”). The new owners, say trimming the comb is unnecessary, and may have consequences for the rooster’s health.
The old owners, however, retain the rights to the name “Sir Big Spur” and now refuse to renew their contract, claiming that a rooster with an intact comb is not representative of a “gamecock.”
The bird formerly known as “Sir Big Spur”, will debut as “The General”. The university said the new name is a reference to Revolutionary War General Thomas Sumter. He was known as the “Fighting Gamecock” and inspired the original name for the athletic department at South Carolina.
South Carolina will host the Dawgs on September 17th at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia. Kick-off is at Noon. WGAC’s gameday coverage will start at 8:00 a.m.
