One Local Business has closed, another is closing its doors soon

Growing up, Thanksgiving was a day spent at home with family.  Eating, relaxing and just spending time being thankful for all that we had. Sharing memories, lots of food, and family flowing in and out.

Over the past few years, it has become more and more common for stores to stay open, or open at some point during the day.  The “Black Friday” suddenly crept into Thanksgiving Day.

Last year, with the pandemic, crowds were a health threat.  In-store shopping was risky for consumers.  It wasn’t such a surprise that businesses announced they’d be closed on Thanksgiving.

Many of those retailers did make the decision mainly based on COVID-19 risks, but also used it as a gift to those employees who had worked so hard all year.

This year, some stores will remain closed on Thanksgiving– which could be a response to the positive feedback from last year!

So, what stores will be closed in the Augusta area? Here’s what we know so far, according to BlackFriday.com!

  • Augusta Mall

While the Black Friday shopping had pushed its way into Thanksgiving Day in years past… this year the Augusta Mall will be closed on Thanksgiving Day.

Management hopes it will give shoppers and employees the time to spend with their family and friends.

They do plan to open back up at 9 a.m. on Black Friday to kick off the holiday shopping season.  They will also have extended hours starting December 10th through Christmas Eve.

  • Harveys Supermarket

Harveys Supermarket on Gordon Highway will be closed on Thanksgiving Day.  The normal business hours for this location are 7am – 10pm.

  • Academy Sports + Outdoors

The store will be closed on Thanksgiving Day.  They will open at 5 a.m. on Black Friday and stay open until 11 p.m.

There will be specific Black Friday deals that will be revealed closed to the date.

  • Bed Bath & Beyond

Earlier this year, Bed Bath & Beyond announced they would be closing their stores on Thanksgiving Day.  This will give their employees time to be with their family.  They do plan to offer “great deals and inspiring products” leading up to Thanksgiving Day.  As for their Black Friday hours, those are to be determined.

  • Belk

Belk’s Black Friday ad confirmed the store will be closed on Thanksgiving Day.  However, deals will be available online that day.  The stores will reopen on Black Friday at 7 a.m.

Their Black Friday deals will actually start early though- kicking off November 19th and going through November 27th!

  • Best Buy

Best Buy will be closed on Thanksgiving.  While in the past, they have been open on the holiday, after last year, they made the decision to close again in 2021.  There will be ways “for customers to easily and conveniently get their holiday shopping done, over the Black Friday weekend and throughout the entire holiday season.” They are planning to begin their Black Friday sale a week before the actual day though, so check them out throughout the month for various deals!

No word on their Black Friday hours at this point.

  • Costco

Most Costco members won’t be surprised by this.  Costco will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, as they usually close for most major holidays.  They don’t typically open their doors earlier on Black Friday either.

Their Black Friday hours are not announced yet, but they will have online sales for customers to check out.

  • Dick's Sporting Goods

Dick’s Sporting Goods will also be closed on Thanksgiving Day, despite their history of opening on Thanksgiving evening.  The stores will reopen on Black Friday for in-store and curbside contactless pickup. Hours to be determined.

  • Foot Locker

Back in June, Foot Locker made the announcement that they would be closing their stores and warehouses on Thanksgiving again this year.  The CEO made a statement, pointing out how hard the employees have worked throughout “extraordinary circumstances” and they are using this opportunity to acknowledge their hard work and commitment.

The current plan is for stores to re-open between 6 a.m. and 8a.m. on Black Friday, with more information when it gets closer.

  • Kohl's

Kohl’s also announced back in June that this would be the second year in a row they would be closed on Thanksgiving Day.  They made the decision because of the “positive response from last year’s closure on Thanksgiving Day, as well as evolving preferences in how and when customers want to shop during the holiday season.”

    Black Friday hours TBD.

  • Target

Target confirmed their Thanksgiving Day closure back in January!  They said last year guests responded well to their new approach and they’ve decide to carry through with that change.

    Black Friday hours TBD.

  • Walmart

Shockingly, Walmart (Sam’s Club locations as well), known for intense crowds on Thanksgiving, will be closed on Thanksgiving Day.  They are using the opportunity to thank their employees for their hard work during the pandemic.

Online deals and Black Friday hours will be coming.

  • Stores Closed In 2020

The following stores were closed back in 2020 during the pandemic, but have not made official announcements for this year at this time:

    – Bath & Body Works

    -Belk

    -GameStop

    -Home Depot

    -JCPenney

    -Lowe’s
