14-Year-Old Identified Following Deadly School Shooting in Winder, Georgia
A 14-year-old is in custody following a mass shooting at Apalachee High School in Barrow County, Georgia this morning.
The new school year just began three weeks ago, and now officials are trying to figure out how the suspect got the weapon and carried out a plan to shoot and kill two students and two teachers, and wound at least 9 others. It wasn’t long before officials confirmed multiple deaths.
An active shooter call went out at 9:30 am with Barrow County Sheriff Judd Smith confirming there were multiple injuries. Smith said it’s going to take several days to gather all the facts and figure out how such a tragic incident took place.
One student talked about trying to save his math teacher who had been shot in the chest, who was bleeding profusely. Another said her father had been shot in the foot and hip and was undergoing surgery.
14-year-old Suspect Identified
The 14-year-old suspect has been identified at Colt Gray. Smith said he will be charged as an adult. He added that the student surrendered peacefully to law enforcement and was taken into custody without incident.
During a late afternoon news conference Smith said, “My heart hurts for these kids. My heart hurts for our community. But I want to make it very clear that hate will not prevail in this county.”
Smith added that for now, there is no indication today’s shooting was targeted and officials had not been made aware of any possible advance warning of what he called “pure evil” this morning.
All Barrow County schools will be closed Thursday and Friday.
