Hurricane Helene left the over 7-mile trail unusable after thousands of trees fell in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) in late September, which took workers months to clear. While the trail is not 100% complete, it is open for residents to get back to their regular routines. Early morning walkers hit the trail before dawn. Later in the day, bike riders cruise along the fixed-up paths.

Mayor Williams explained in a Fox 54 News interview, “We still have to get our get all our parks back to normal […], but I think having the Greeneway open […] is a big part of normalcy for our citizens.”

Derek Ali, who uses the trail regularly, talked about how the path helps bring the community together for exercise and recreation. “You see a lot of your neighbors. It’s good to see a smiling face when you’re on a walk,” said Ali to Fox 54 News.

New resident Ariana Ioannidi fell in love with the trail right away, appreciating the mix of outdoor activities. “It’s been nice to have somewhere local to get out and enjoy nature, told Ioannidi to Fox 54 News.”

City officials haven’t issued an official completion date for all storm repairs in North Augusta. Getting the Greenway trail back open is just one success story. Work is still happening around town to restore other public spaces.
