Germany Set To Launch A Coronavirus Tracing App This Week

The easing of COVID-19 Alert Level 2 restrictions on business, gatherings and travel were eased in three stages across New Zealand starting from 14 May 2020. Restaurants, cinemas, retail, playgrounds and gyms are now able to open with physical distancing and strict hygiene measures in place. Domestic travel has resumed and schools and early childhood centres are also open again. Gatherings are currently limited to 10 people but measures will ease further on Friday 29 May to allow up to 100 people. Germany is in the process of launching a smartphone app that will trace coronavirus infections. Per Mashable, this technology uses Bluetooth to detect people who are at risk of COVID-19.

The outlet states, “The app, which requires Bluetooth to be turned on at all times, will measure the distance between phone owners. Once it detects two users have been within 1.5 meters of each other for longer than 15 minutes, the devices will exchange user IDs. And if a person tests positive for coronavirus, the app will notify everyone who came into contact with them in this manner. The app doesn’t rely on a centralized database, does not communicate a user’s location info, and does not access a user’s personal information.”

They add that the German government hopes the app will aid in curbing the second wave of coronavirus. The smartphone app is expected to launch this week. Other countries that have this technology include France, Italy, Spain, Austria, and Norway
