If your cluttered garage is more like “Jumanji” than a space worthy of a Martha Stewart episode, it’s time to get organized. But if you think this is an impossible task with years worth of accumulated stuff covering your garage from floor to ceiling, here are some tips on overcoming your literal “mountain” of junk.

1. Sort Through your Cluttered Garage

Sort out through your belongings and dispose of those that you don’t need anymore to create more space. To make decluttering easier, categorize your belongings into three groups: keep, donate, and discard.

2. Create Specific Zones

Assign different zones in your garage for various categories, such as tools, sports equipment, gardening supplies, and seasonal items. Having specific zones will not only make it easier for you to find what you’re looking for but to also know where to put these things after using them.

3. Take Advantage of Vertical Spaces

Use wall-mounted shelves, pegboards, and hooks to store items. This maximizes vertical spaces and keeps things organized and accessible. Just make sure your shelves and pegboards are properly installed to avoid any accidents of things falling over.

4. Invest in Storage Solutions

Choose stackable storage bins, cabinets, and overhead racks to keep items neatly stored. If you don’t want clear bins (to easily identify the contents), don’t forget to label your boxes or bins instead.

5. Keep Frequently Used Items Accessible

Store frequently used tools and supplies at eye level or any part of your garage that is easily accessed to avoid unnecessary searching. As such, keep seasonal items at the back of the topmost shelf.

6. Set Up a Dedicated Workspace

If you use your garage for DIY projects or to tinker with your car, create a workstation with a foldable workbench and wall-mounted tool organizers. Keep the tools that you always use organized and within reach when working. It will also be easier to put things back once you’re done and you’ll avoid having to deal with a cluttered garage again.

7. Regularly Clean and Reorganize

Dedicate time each month (or you decide the frequency, especially if you have a lot of stuff you need to clean and organize) to tidy up, sweep the floor, take inventory, and rearrange items as needed. If you find something that you think you will not need again in the future, dispose of it immediately to prevent clutter from building up again.

8. Store Similar Items Together

Keep similar items in the same area or bin. For example, store all gardening tools in one area or bin if it will fit, and all sports equipment in another. Not only will it make finding what you need easier, but you can also see easily if you have any duplicates.

9. Plan for Seasonal Storage

Store seasonal items like holiday decorations or summer and winter gear in less accessible areas when not in use and swap them out as needed. For instance, as winter approaches, move your winter clothes into your closet and store your summer clothes in the garage for the season.

10. Use a Rolling Tool Cart

A rolling tool cart is your new best friend since it allows you to easily move your tools around the garage as you work, keeping your tools organized and at hand when you need them.
