It won’t be long before we bid 2023 goodbye and welcome in 2024.  It’s hard to believe another year is almost gone.  And soon we’ll be celebrating New Year’s Eve in the CSRA. There are many events that will be happening around town to ring in the new year, and we’ll take a look at those below!

Reflecting On 2023

But first, let’s reflect on what a year it’s been! The year was one full of ups and downs. There’s been a lot going on in the United States and around the world.  Let’s take a look at some of the big things that have happened this year.

We lost quite a few celebrities this year.  Some of those include:

  • Suzanne Somers
  • Lisa Marie Presley
  • Jerry Springer
  • Tina Turner
  • Tony Bennett
  • Sinéad O’Connor
  • Bob Barker
  • Jimmy Buffett
  • Matthew Perry

Some Of The Big Stories Of 2023

In January, the Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin had to be revived on the field during a Monday Night Football game against the Cincinnati Bengals. After spending days on a ventilator, he woke up asking who won the game. He has made a full recovery and is back with the Bills.

And in February, the U.S. shot down a Chinese spy balloon. The object was the size of 3 school busses and had drifted over Montana before being shot down by U.S. Military.

A big story out of South Carolina happened in March.  That’s when Alex Murdaugh was sentenced to life in prison for murdering his wife and son. Also in March, Taylor Swift began her massive “Eras Tour” and Donald Trump became the first former President indicted for a crime.

By May, there was the big Hollywood writer’s strike, and COVID-19 was declared to no longer be a global health emergency.   Then in June, a submarine went missing on an expedition to view the Titanic.  Unfortunately, the crew was never recovered and were lost due to a catastrophic implosion.

And one of the biggest stories: The Israel-Hamas War began in October after Hamas terrorists launched a surprise attack. Many lives have been lost due to this tragic conflict.  In addition, hostages were taken, including many Americans. Despite agreements being reached for release of some hostages, fighting still continues.

Heading Into 2024

While every year has its ups and downs, here’s hoping for a much better 2024.  Whether you set New Year’s resolutions or not, this time of year is always a great time to reflect on what went well and what didn’t.  It’s a time to slow down and decide how you want the year to go.

Maybe there’s a habit you want to stop: smoking, drinking, etc. Or maybe there’s something that you want to learn how to do.  Learning new skills is easier than ever these days.  There are so many resources to learn how to do just about anything.  Just a quick Google search or a search on YouTube will bring up a wealth of information.

We hope you have had a great 2023, and we’re wishing you an even better 2024!  Let’s take a look at some ways you can ring in the New Year in the CSRA!
