Sunday is National One Hit Wonder Day. There’s something every day, so that’s what Sunday is. Naturally, it brings up the question of the best one hit wonders.

This morning on the air, we brought it up and I remembered a VERY OLD American Top 40 show, with Kasey Kasem that I heard, probably in the late 70’s as he counted down the Top 40 One Hit Wonders to that date.

  • Here's What AT 40 Said.

As I like to say on the radio, my 401K probably has about $67 in in, but I remember crap like this.  When he was done counting them down the No.1 One Hit Wonder song was “In The Year 2525” by Zager & Evans.

  • How Bout The 80's

But that then lead to conversations about One Hit Wonders SINCE 1970.  VH1 says the biggest One Hit Wonder of the 80’s was Dexy’s Midnight Runner’s “Come On Eileen

Mind you, ALL OF THESE are up for debate, and that’s what makes the whole exercise fun.

  • And The 90's

The biggest One Hit Wonder of the 90’s was Trixter’s “Give It To Me Good”.  I have to admit, I don’t remember that one.

  • This Century

Now we get to this century, with the biggest One Hit Wonder of the 2000’s being Los Lonely Boys “Heaven”.  That one I remember!

  • Since 2010

The biggest One Hit Wonder of the 2010’s is LeRoux’s “Bulletproof”.  Again, sorry.  But that’s why it’s fun.

  • Other Lists

Other lists show, Los Del Rio and “The Macarena”.  Soft Cell and “Tainted Love”, which by the way is the ONLY song I’ve performed in a karaoke bar.

The sixties were FULL of one hit wonders…

    Tequila by The Champs

The Lion Sleeps Tonight by The Tokens

Monster Mash by Bobby “Boris” Pickett

    Wipe Out by the Safaris

There were plenty more.  But here’s a fun factoid, which decade had the most One Hit Wonders to reach No.1?  How bout the 70’s with 23 songs.

So what’s your favorite?  For fun, call it up on YouTube and just have a good time remembering.
