Waynesboro residents have a city-wide boil water advisory in effect until further notice.

The Waynesboro Water Department says a new well was brought online earlier than scheduled due to a water main leak.

"That may be disrupting your water supply or causing water pressure in parts of the water system to drop to very low levels," according to a news release.

The Waynesboro Water Department says the boil water advisory has been issued out of an abundance of caution, since there's the potential for a health hazard. Officials say microbial contamination could occur in areas without positive pressure.

Waynesboro Residents Should Boil Water

  • Heat water until bubbles come quickly from the bottom of the container
  • Continue heating the water for one minute once it begins to boil
  • Remove the water from the heat source and allow it to cool before use

Boiled Tap Water or Bottled Water Should be Used for:

  • Drinking
  • Brushing your teeth
  • Washing food and preparing food and baby formula
  • Making ice
  • Drinking water for pets

The boil water advisory will remain in effect until the City of Waynesboro Water Department has done the appropriate testing to ensure there is no longer a public health concern.

Water customers will be notified when the boil advisory has been lifted.

Once the advisory is lifted, residents should flush all faucets for a minimum of two minutes before using it for drinking or food preparation.
