Was Jingle Bells Written In Georgia? The original title was The One Horse Open Sleigh and it dates back to 1857. According to songhall.org, James Pierpont penned the Christmas favorite in Savannah during a Thanksgiving service.
The article also noted that the Unitarian Church where Pierpont played the organ and directed the first rendition of the song has been moved from its original location, however a “Jingle Bells” marker honoring its composer was dedicated to Pierpont at the site of the church in June of 1985.
If you ask someone from Boston, they have a different story. According to history.com, the song was penned in Medford, Massachusetts.
A few other facts you may not know:
- The song wasn’t intended to be a Christmas song
- It was the first song broadcast from space.
The favorite has been recorded in almost every style. Some of the most popular include:
- Gwen Stefani
- Frank Sinatra
- Peggy Lee
- Al Green
- Andrea Bocelli and the Muppets
- Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters
- Ella Fitzgerald
- Barbra Streisand
I’ve list a few of my favorite versions below. Need the full lyrics? Here you go!
Dashing through the snow
In a one-horse open sleigh
O’er the fields we go
Laughing all the way
Bells on bobtails ring
Making spirits bright
What fun it is to ride and sing
A sleighing song tonight, oh!
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh, hey!
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh
