The project will cost $675,000 total, and the county is contributing $175,000 as a local match. Fixes will include the replacement of old compactors that have stopped working as well as new trash bins.
The county has received numerous complaints from residents who have difficulty using the tall receptacles. Elderly residents will benefit largely from the newer compactors that will make disposing of waste much easier.
"This is a grant that Congressman Clyburn assisted us in getting to do some badly needed work at our recycling sites," Washington said, per the Post and Courier. "We're hoping to replace some of our compactors and also some of our large trash receptacles. This is something we have been working on for quite some time, and while it may not solve all the problems, it is definitely a step in the right direction."
Sites with broken compactors will get fixed first. These locations now use tall bins instead. Senior citizens struggle to hoist their trash bags up high enough to dump them in.
