In a series of votes earlier this month, the Aiken City Council added eight new properties to the corporate limits. The properties include a church, an open plot for a duplex, and six homes.
The 4.09-acre Calvary Chapel site at 1411 East Pine Log Road will join District 2 as a general business zone. They'll wait until after July 4 to make it official — a move that lets them sell fireworks, which they couldn't do inside city lines.
A vacant spot where Pinecrest Avenue meets Terry Drive will be developed into a duplex.
"The applicant's family has really invested themselves into this community and has really brought enlightenment and excitement to the northwest side of Aiken," said Councilwoman Lessie Price to The Aiken Standard.
The other six locations are all houses. Brian and Claire Coffman's place at 1009 Murray Court sits in Gem Lakes, while Westover Cottage LLC owns one on Westover Drive. Three Moore family houses line Lynwood Drive in Pinehurst, and Dennis and Pamela Thomas own the location at 125 Vivion Drive in Westwood Hills.
District 3, under Kay Brohl, got bigger with these changes. "My district grew by quite a bit tonight," Brohl pointed out. She mentioned how folks join up to cut costs on services and get top-notch safety protection.
Most locations received RS-15 zoning tags. Ed Woltz stepped aside for one vote since he owns land next to the Westover Drive location.
