A $25,000 grant from the Georgia Council on Literacy will boost reading programs at Rise Augusta. Staff accepted the funds at the Augusta-Richmond County Library during Wednesday's Georgia Reads gathering.

Rise Augusta was one of 10 winners of the Georgia Reads Community Award. NFL star Malcolm Mitchell, who writes children's books, was a featured speaker at the event.

"First thing I say is you can't give up," said Mitchell to WRDW/WAGT. "It's difficult and it's not an easy process. It's delayed gratification that takes time, so don't give up. The other thing I say is make it relevant to me. It was understanding how reading can help me get where I wanted to be in life that made the biggest change and excited me, and invested me."

Besides his NFL success, Mitchell shines as an author. His works include "The Magician's Hat" and "My Very Favorite Book in the Whole Wide World."

Rise Augusta stood out for its clear impact on young readers. With this money, they'll extend their reach to more schools across the area.
