An Augusta man was taken into custody Wednesday in Washington County after deputies got a call about a suspicious male carrying bags near Washington State Prison.

A Georgia Department of Corrections K9 unit and Washington County deputies quickly responded to the area.

Sheriff Joel Cochran said 22-year-old Jamel Barnes of Augusta was spotted in a field east of the prison around noon.

Once authorities discovered what was in the bags, Barnes was arrested and taken into custody.

Augusta Man in Custody on Several Charges

  • 3 counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Distribute (felony)
  • Trading With Inmates Without Authorization of the Warden (felony)
  • 4 counts of Items Prohibited by Inmates (felony)
  • Criminal Trespass (misdemeanor)
  • Giving a False Name (misdedeanor)

"We want those with ill intentions to understand that this collaboration and effort will persist. If you don't want to spend a significant amount of time behind bars, stay out of Washington County if you're planning to engage in illegal activities," said Cochran.

Cochran added, "The swift arrest was made possible through the teamwork and dedication of the Washington County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia Department of Corrections personnel."
