Golf week construction-related closures will be suspended to keep traffic flowing

It’s almost time!

Georgia Department of Transportation

It's almost here. The golf traffic signs are up throughout the area, the "need tickets" signs can be spotted along Washington Road and area hotels and restaurants are gearing up for what is undoubtedly their biggest week of the year.

The first round of practice for the 88th Masters Tournament begins Monday, April 7. As always, morning traffic headed to the Augusta National Golf Club will be bumper-to-bumper, just like traffic headed away from the course in the late afternoon and evening hours.

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will be doing its part to keep traffic flowing by restricting any construction-related lane closures on interstates and major state routes leading to Augusta from Wednesday, April 2, through Monday, April 14.

Before Masters week arrives, the women are in town this week to compete in the Augusta National Women's Amateur. The first two rounds of play are April 2 and April 3 at Champions Retreat Golf Club. Friday, April 4, is the official practice round at Augusta National, with the final round being played there on Saturday, April 5.

Sunday, April 6, is the Drive, Chip and Putt Championship for youth ages 7 to 15. There are 80 junior golfers representing 28 states this year, in addition to two from Canadian provinces and one from India.

Golf Week Changes You Need to Know

Lane closures will be suspended on I-20 from Covington to Augusta and on I-520. All Georgia DOT projects in Columbia and Richmond Counties will have lane closure restrictions. Also, projects on major state routes leading to Augusta in Burke, Emanuel, Jefferson, Jenkins and McDuffie Counties will be affected.

Georgia DOT will also send HERO units and additional CHAMP units to the Augusta area to help with any traffic-related incidents on or along interstate highways in hopes of clear roads and keeping traffic flowing as smoothly as possible.

Local Traffic Plan Stays the Same

  • The Washington Road off-ramp from I-20 will be closed each day from 7:00 a.m. to around 9:00 a.m.
  • Traffic from Atlanta will be directed to Exit 200 to Riverwatch Parkway, to Alexander Drive
  • Alexander Drive may be closed near its railroad crossing, depending on traffic volume
  • Berckmans Road to Washington Road: Left turns will be restricted in the afternoon, forcing traffic to go straight to Riverwatch Parkway
  • Evening Restrictions: The left turn lane on Alexander Drive will be closed. Kroger access will be limited to right out only. There will be a closure at Surrey Center.
  • Temporary Traffic Signal: Will be installed at the intersection of Washington Road and River Ridge Drive during golf week.
  • Changeable Message Signs: About 20 changeable message signs will help direct drivers to available parking areas.
  • New Rideshare Lot and App: Augusta has implemented a new rideshare lot and encourages drivers to download a new app to help navigate traffic.
