Schools Announce Return to School dates following Hurricane Helene

The recovery process continues following Hurricane Helene's wave of destruction to the CSRA.
As of October 5, about 80% of the residents in Richmond County had power, water had been restored to most residents in the city and the boil water advisory had been lifted.

In Columbia County, as of Saturday night, approximately 17,000 Georgia Power customers were still without power, while about 3,000 Jefferson Electric customers in the county were still without power.

As of Saturday night, Aiken Electric Cooperative was reporting more than 40,000 customers have power with more expected to have service restored before the night is over.

Area school systems had originally expected to resume classes on Monday, October 7, but that won't be possible for some until power is restored and roads are cleared for buses.

Schools Announce Return Dates as Early as Monday

  • Columbia County: Employees report Tuesday, October 8; Students return Wednesday, October 9 and will also attend school Thursday, October 10. Students will not attend school Friday, October 11 since that's Fall Break for students and a District Professional Learning Day. Students and staff will be off on Monday, October 14, for Columbus Day.
  • Richmond County: Students return on Wednesday, October 16
  • Burke County: Students return on Monday, October 21
  • McDuffie County: Students will not return October 7. More than half of the system's employees don't have power and many roads are still impassable. Officials will assess the situation on a daily basis and announces changes when they are able
  • Lincoln County: Students and staff return Monday, October 7
  • Warren County: Faculty and staff return Monday, October 7; Students return Tuesday, October 8
  • Aiken County: Students and staff are currently on Fall Break that ends Friday, October 11. Students and staff return Monday, October 14
  • Edgefield County: Students and staff are currently on Fall Break that ends Friday, October 11. Students and staff return Monday, October 14
  • Augusta University: Campus will reopen Monday, October 7
  • Augusta Tech: Campus will reopen Thursday, October 10
  • Paine College: Campus will reopen Monday, October 7
  • USC Aiken: Campus will reopen Monday, October 7
  • Sail Charter School: Classes resume Wednesday, October 16
  • Augusta Prep: Classes resume Monday, October 7
