Happy Bones Jones Brings Comedy Back To Augusta
Happy Bones Jones presents "The Jest Joust Comedy Calamity"
Monday nights are really funny! Local singer/songwriter, comedian and entertainer extraordinaire Happy Bones Jones is hosting a new comedy night at the Fox’s Lair, the cozy underground bar in the basement below The Olde Town Inn on Telfair, on Monday nights. “The Jest Joust Comedy Calamity” has had regional comedians competing for a 10 week run, but Happy Bones Jones would love to see it become a regular thing on Monday nights. He’s also turning the whole thing into a podcast!
Happy Bones Jones and The Jest Joust Comedy Calamity
Augusta has had only a smattering of “comedy nights” at various venues since the closure of The Comedy House Theater on Washington Road years ago. But Happy Bones Jones is betting on some local hunger for a fun show and a good time! By all accounts there has been a comedy resurgence over the last few years that might even rival the 80’s prime time of stand up.
“The Joust” has an open mike format so it’s available to all comedians, amateur and professional with no age, gender, or nationality restrictions and the content is no holds barred so you can leave your easily offended girlfriend at home! The only restriction is that all material must be original and created by the performer. Of course plagiarism or use of copyrighted material without permission will result in disqualification from the competition, not to mention bad vibes from everyone else!
Happy Bones Jones Keeps Comedy On The Clock
Performers will get 5 minutes to dazzle the audience with their schtick. If you’ve been to the Fox’s Lair you know it’s a pretty cozy venue but Jones says they may add a few T.V.s outside to accommodate a bigger audience. The performers have been given a theme each night like “The comedic potential of mistranslations in fortune cookies” but when you put a bunch of comedians onstage, you never know where things are going to go so it could be a wild ride!
Don’t miss upcoming acts like Comedian Franko on September 9th, Andy Crooks on September 16th and Alyx Libby on September 23rd! Pre-sale tickets are available at the Happy Bones Jones website.
Augustans Share 5 Things They Like About Our City
Whether you’ve lived in the area for your entire life or just a few years, chances are there are at least a few things you like about Augusta. As with any city, there will always be pros and cons. But today, let’s focus on the positives.
History Of Augusta
A settlement in the Augusta area was established in 1736 by British General James Oglethorpe. He is the one who gave the area its name, honoring the bride of Frederick Louis, Prince of Wales. The original settlement is in the area we now know as Summerville. The area was home to tribes of Creek and Cherokee Indians at the time. And the city would play a vital role during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars.
In 1847, the Augusta Canal was constructed, which led Augusta to become the world’s second largest inland cotton market during the cotton boom. The area also has the only structure ever built by the Confederate States of America, along with many significant homes and buildings.
The city of Augusta also served as the state capital of Georgia from 1785 until 1795.
There have been many changes throughout the years, but one tradition that Augusta is known for got its start in 1934. The Masters Tournament is hosted the first full week of April each year at the Augusta National Golf Club. And while people who aren’t from the area may only know Augusta for the Masters Tournament, those who live here know there’s more to Augusta than just one special week each year.
