Steph Curry’s Underrated Golf Tour In Barnwell
Steph Curry’s Underrated Golf Tour came to Barnwell over the weekend.
A few years ago, Steph Curry began an effort to grow the game of golf at the grass roots level and created the Underrated Tour.
What Is The Underrated Golf Tour?
The tour is for kids ages 12-18. It was not created specifically for kids of lower financial means, although many of the participants are in that category but there are also kids that play on the AJGA tour and others.
There are four events a year, culminating in the year ending “Curry Cup” finale. Curry pays for the travel and lodging of each participant no matter how far they come. He also picks up the tab for the travel and lodging of one parent, to accompany the child.
Along with golf, there are nighttime activities, including seminars, dinners and ballrooms outfitted as game rooms. Rooms that would rival Dave & Busters.
The tour came to one of the new golf jewels in the community last weekend, Old Barnwell. I was out there on Friday afternoon for a practice round and was taken by just how many of the kids spoke to us first, before we even spoke to them. They were engaging, polite, attentive and inquisitive. I found that the most enjoyable part of the experience.
How Parents Feel About The Underrated Golf Tour
I also spent some time speaking to some of the parents, who were, rightfully so, very proud of their kids, but also extremely complimentary of Curry’s commitment to the project.
The level of play was also impressive. Remember, the kids are traveling the country, playing some of the hardest courses in the country, Old Barnwell is no slouch. In the end, the boys’ winner, Jayden Lizama shot 68-70 to win by two. The girls’ winner, Alexis Lamadrid shot 76-68, to win by one.
Steph Curry loves golf, and along with the commitment he made to the golf programs at Howard University, his Underrated Tour is just another way he’s making the game more accessible and available on a grand scale.
Good for him!
