An elderly woman was murdered Sunday in Richmond County, while investigators say her husband then attempted to take his own life. He has since died as a result of his injuries.

Coroner Mark Bowen says 86-year-old Kimiko Stewart was found dead inside a home in the 3400 block of Byron Place in Augusta just after 7:00 pm Sunday. She had at least one gunshot wound.

Her husband, 86-year-old Jerome Stewart, was transported to Wellstar MCG where he was initially reported to be in critical condition with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Bowen says Stewart just died before midnight.

The incident is still under investigation.

Elderly Woman Murdered One Month After Another Murder-Suicide in Augusta

It was one month ago that a woman was shot and killed in broad daylight at the intersection of Walton Way and Druid Park Avenue.

Richmond County deputies were called to the scene about 1:30 pm May 21, where 45-year-old Lashonda Wilkerson of Hephzibah was pronounced dead.

Coroner Mark Bowen said Wilkerson had at least one gunshot wound.

The search began for the shooter, but it didn't take authorities long to find him.

About an hour later, deputies found the suspect's car not far away at Pendleton King Park. Investigators say 45-year-old Michael Brooks was found dead behind the wheel of the car with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Authorities said Brooks was Wilkerson's former husband.
