The Imperial Theatre’s Capital Campaign
The Imperial Theatre is launching a $10 million capital campaign.
Executive Director Charles Scavullo announced this week that they had received a gift of stock worth $206,000 from businessman Peter Knox IV.
Quoting Chip Matson, the Chairman of the Board of the Theatre, “A gift of this magnitude is truly a blessing for the Imperial, and we’re so grateful for Peter and his ongoing support. We hope this gift will serve as a catalyst to kickstart our capital campaign.”
Over the last decade the venue has undergone $2 million in infrastructure and cosmetic interior improvements, of which $1 million was related to SPLOST VI funding, but to restore the Imperial Theatre to her former historical glory, an additional $8 to $10 million is needed.
More about the Imperial Theatre
The Imperial Theatre opened in 1918 as a vaudeville showcase. Among the earliest recorded appearances was the visit of Charlie Chaplin, who appeared at the theatre on April 16, 1918, selling Liberty war bonds.
As the downtown area declined in the 1980’s, so did the theatre which closed in 1981. In 1985, it was recognized for its architectural significance and reopened as a performing arts venue with the help of local performing arts groups like the Augusta Ballet and the Augusta Players.
