A pedestrian killed on Gordon Highway late Wednesday night is under investigation.
Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen confirmed that 30-year-old Filadelfo Raul Chiquin-Jalal of Guatemala was hit by a vehicle as he was crossing the west bound lanes of Gordon Highway. Bowen said he was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:35 pm.
Pedestrian deaths have been on the rise in recent years. Three areas in Richmond County reporting multiple pedestrian fatalities last year included Gordon Highway, Mike Padgett Highway and Peach Orchard Road.
There were 3 pedestrian fatalities on Gordon Highway just in the last 3 months of 2023 alone.
The latest data released from the Governors Highway Safety Association says Georgia's pedestrian fatalities went up by nearly 58% from January-June 2019 to January-June 2022.
