This past Thursday, March 21, was recognized as World Syndrome Day. It is a day that honors those individuals living with Down Syndrome by focusing on their resilience and unique contributions to everyday life.

If you didn't (or did) wear mismatched socks for World Down Syndrome Day, Augusta will be hosting A World Down Syndrome Day Celebration, this coming weekend on March 30. This celebration will be held at Diamond Lakes Recreational Park. Anyone can come out and be a part of this special day - especially those with Down Syndrome and their families.

The event is free of cost and will run 11am until 2pm.

Here is a list of activities that will be taking place at the celebration:

  • Kickball
  • Cornhole
  • Obstacle Courses
  • Karate

There will also be some dancing going on and a few special visitors will drop by like super heroes and princesses. It doesn't step there! It will be food, drinks, and more.

Of course with this event being so close to the Easter holiday, an Easter Egg Hunt will be taking place.

This event is a great way to bring awareness and educate others about Down Syndrome. you can find out more information here.

This day is strategically set on the 21st of march because that represents the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome, which is responsible for Down Syndrome. Briefly mentioned earlier, many people bring awareness to Down Syndrome on the 21st by wearing mismatched socks. The idea of the mismatched socks is to become a conversation starter. The mismatched socks also represent how we are all unique in different ways.
