Housing costs have risen dramatically over the past few years and continue to rise. Teachers and other school professionals have found it hard to live in the area that they work in.
At the Augusta commission meeting held on March 19, it was shared that Augusta, Georgia is preparing for a solution in bringing new housing opportunities for educators in Richmond County.
Augusta, Georgia’s Housing and Community Development Department has received approval to provide HOME Partnership Investment Program (HOME) Funding to Vetted Investments and Acquisitions to develop new construction of four affordable single-family units on Lyman Street. Lyman Street is located off of Deans Bridge Road in South Augusta.
These funds are to help develop multifamily rental properties and to build and renovate single-family homes.
These units will be geared towards the new initiative T.E.A.C.H. This stands for Tenured Educators Affordable Community Housing.
This multi-phased infill development will provide access to homeownership opportunities to Richmond County Board of Education educators and employees within the required income limits for the HOME Investment Partnership Program.
More Districts around the nation have been exploring the project of building housing for teachers. School districts are a huge part of any community and the teachers are a huge part of that, so some districts are now adding housing to their responsibility of keeping their school district up.
These complexes include houses to rent, not only teachers, but to other school employees as well.
