Local school nurse Ashley Staulcup faces charges after being accused of stealing a student's medication that was stored in the Brookwood Elementary school's clinic.

Parents of Brookwood Elementary School students were notified Tuesday that Columbia County School District Police had reason to suspect the tampering of some medication stored in the clinic.

Columbia County School District Police say Staulcup, who was working at the school, has admitted to taking the medication.

What was Taken

An affidavit says Staulcup is accused of unlawfully taking 22 Adderall 5 mg. capsules prescribed for a student for her own use.

Charge Against Staulcup

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office says Staulcup was arrested and charged with Obtaining Controlled Substance by Theft.  The alleged incidents reportedly occurred between February 1 and March 18, 2024.

School officials have confirmed Staulcup is no longer employed by the school district.

Parents Were Asked to go to Brookwood Elementary if Your Child has Medication Stored There

A statement from Brookwood Principal Melissa Culpepper said, "Out of an abundance of caution, we ask that if you have a medication provided to the school clinic, to please come inspect the contents and if necessary, at your discretion, provide a replacement."

Culpepper added, "No further medication will be dispensed until this process has been verified."

Columbia County school officials said they are taking allegations such as these extremely seriously and are fully investigating, confirming that the former Brookwood Elementary school nurse has been charged

School operations are continuing at Brookwood today as normal.  The ongoing investigation will not disrupt instruction, according to Culpepper.
