Richmond County deputies were called to Lucy C. Laney High School just before 10:00 Monday morning at 1339 Laney Walker Boulevard after getting a report of shots fired.

From the Richmond County Sheriff's Office:  "Upon arrival, Deputies were informed that at least one gunshot was fired in a restroom from inside the school.  After reviewing the video from inside the school, Deputies were able to locate and detain the students responsible for the gunfire."

The Sheriff's Office says deputies did not find anyone injured at the scene.

Today, investigators say one student has been charged with firing at least one shot in a bathroom at the school.  He was taken into custody and charged with Possession of a Firearm or Knife During the Commission of a Crime; Weapons in School Building, Grounds or Functions; Criminal Damage to Property in the First Degree; Interference with Government Property; and Theft by Receiving Stolen Property.  The student's name and booking photograph were not released.

There were soft lockdowns at nearby A.R. Johnson Health Science and Engineering Magnet School, also on Laney Walker Boulevard, and at C.T. Walker Magnet School on Wrightsboro Road.

Two Arrested in 2022 for Shots Fired at Laney's Football Stadium

Two teens were arrested in September, 2022 after shots were fired at Lucy C. Laney Football stadium.  Richmond County authorities said a fight started on the visitor's side that spilled into the parking lot near the gym.

Two vehicles were struck by gunfire, but no injuries were reported.

Deputies arrested 17-year-old Roosevelt Demmons of Thomson and 17-year-old Santana Mance of Dearing.  Both were charged with Possession of a Firearm or Knife During a Crime, Damage to Property, Aggravated Assault, and Weapons in the School Building, Grounds, or Function.
