Update: The driver in a hit-and-run involving a 5-year-old child in Emanuel County that left the scene is now in custody.

The Sheriff's Office says the child was hit by a truck on Outler Circle in north Emanuel County at 6 pm Wednesday. Witnesses said the driver of the truck was identified as Joshua Walker Purvis of Kite, Georgia. He reportedly fled from the scene.

The child, whose name has not been released, was initially taken to Emanuel Medical Center and later transported to Children's Hospital of Georgia in Augusta. The child is in critical condition.

Emanuel County authorities say Purvis was located on Keith Screws Road in Emanuel County and taken into custody.
