Lewiston Road Road Closures and Detours
Columbia County, GA Government

Planned Lewiston Road closures and detours this week have been postponed.  The 90-hour Road Closure and Detour of Lewiston Road/Horizon South Parkway at I-20, Exit 190 to finalize work related to the Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) configuration conversion won't begin this Thursday now.

Predicted weather conditions for the original January 18-22 road closure and detour have prompted the project's contractor, ER Snell, to reschedule the work for the following week, starting at noon January 25 and lasting through 6:00 am Monday, January 29.

During that time frame, the following will be closed:

  • I-20 Exit 190 Interchange--There will be no traffic access between I-20 Exit 190 and Lewiston Road/Horizon South Parkway
  • I-20 Exit 190 Overpass--There will be no traffic permitted across the Lewiston Road/Horizon South Parkway overpass over I-20
  • Lewiston Road between I-20 West Ramp and William Few Parkway.  There will be no through traffic permitted along this section of Lewiston Road
  • Horizon South Parkway between I-20 East Ramp and Gateway Boulevard.  There will be no through traffic permitted along this section of Horizon South Parkway

Detours Will be Posted for the Interchange Closure that Will Utilize:

  • I-20 Exit 183 Appling Harlem Highway (US 221/SR 47) to the West
  • I-20 Exit 194 South Belair Road/Jimmie Dyess Parkway (SR 383) to the East

The closure is needed to construct the remaining portions of the diverging diamond interchange (DDI) that can't be done while traffic is crossing the bridge or using the ramps.

The Work Will Include:

  • Realignments of lanes
  • Pouring curb and gutter
  • Pouring concrete islands
  • Placing pavement markings
  • Reconfiguring, reprogramming, and testing of signal equipment

Weather Permitting:

It's expected that the ramps and through traffic will reopen to traffic on Monday, January 29 by 6:00 am.  At that time, new traffic patterns will be in place that follow the new DDI lane configurations.

Don't Forget:

  • Slow down in the work zone
  • Allow extra distance between vehicles
  • Watch for advanced warning signs
  • Obey road crew flaggers
  • Take an alternate route if possible for the time being, or allow additional time for commuting while the closures and detours are in effect
