The CSRA is bracing for some rough weather on Tuesday. Heavy rain, hail, and damaging winds are expected thanks to a strong low-pressure system moving into the area later.
Today, it's the calm before the storm. It will be a mostly cloudy, warm day with a high temperature in the upper 60s, but it could get windy. Sustained winds will be around 25 mph with gusts over 40 mph a real possibility with steady rain overnight. Expect up to 1/2 inch of rainfall tonight.
All eyes will be on the weather Tuesday, though. Showers are likely in the morning with windy conditions by late morning. By afternoon, severe weather can be expected. Expect damaging winds, possibly even tornadoes and large, damaging hail. This weather system has a lot of rain with it. In fact, rainfall could total about two inches, leading to some localized flooding in both Georgia and South Carolina. Most of the severe weather will stay in South Georgia on Tuesday. The National Weather Service says the wind will be the first thing you notice as the storm approaches. Winds will be out of the east at 15 to 20 mph. Gusts will be 45 mph range. A Wind Advisory will be in effect until 7 pm Tuesday.
In South Carolina, most of the Midlands are expecting strong storms on Tuesday. The main threats will be heavy rain and damaging straight-line winds with gusts up to 55 mph. Isolated tornadoes are also a possibility.

- Richmond County Schools (GA)--In order for students to be marked present for Tuesday, January 9, they must log in between the evening of January 8 through midnight of January 9 and complete their assignments. Parents and students are reminded to check Canvas for Asynchronous Learning Day assignments

- COLUMBIA COUNTY SCHOOLS WILL REMAIN OPEN TUESDAY
Students will learn remotely Tuesday, due to severe weather in the forecast. There will be no on-campus instruction or activities, including sports, on Tuesday in any of those school systems.
Technical School Closure
- Aiken Technical College campus will be closed Tuesday, January 9, due to inclement weather in the forecast. On-campus and online classes are canceled at Aiken Tech on Tuesday. Campus operations and classes will resume Wednesday, January 10.
Timeline for the Severe Weather
- The leading edge of the rain will move into the CSRA late tonight. It will start as light rain, then become heavier and more widespread overnight.
- The line of storms and heaviest rain will be over the metro Atlanta area on Tuesday between 5 am and 8 am.
- By 9 am stronger storms should be east of Atlanta and closer to Athens
Wind Advisory in Effect Tuesday from 6 am to 9 pm
- South winds 25 to 35 mph with wind gusts around 45 mph expected.
- The wind advisory is in effect for portions of east central Georgia and central South Carolina.
- Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects.
- Tree limbs could be blown down and power outages could result.
- Winds this strong can make driving difficult. Use caution if traveling during the storm
Things will dry out Wednesday, then expect more rain in the area on Friday.
