In a press release dated 10/27/2023, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns consumers against purchasing or using 26 various over-the-counter eye drop products.  The eye drop recall was amended on 10/30/2023 to include an additional product.

The FDA warns again use of the eye drop products due to the potential risk of eye infections. The eye infections could result in partial vision loss or blindness. If you are using these products, you should stop immediately.  And if you show signs of a potential eye infection after using the eye drops, you should seek medical attention.

The eye drop products are marketed under these brands:

  • CVS Health
  • Leader (Cardinal Health)
  • Rugby (Cardinal Health)
  • Rite Aid
  • Target Up & Up
  • Velocity Pharma

Eye drop products are intended to be sterile. The risk of issues with ophthalmic drugs are heighted because applying a drug product to your eyes bypasses our body's natural defenses.

The FDA has recommened the manufacturer recall all lots of the eye drops.  The agency investigators not only found insanitart conditions in the manufacturing facility, but also had positive bacterial test results from samplings in production areas.

Consumers are encouraged to properly discard these products. CVS, Rite Aid, Target, and Walmart are removing the products from store shelves and their websites.  Any products branded as Leader, Rugby, and Velocity might still be on shelves for pruchase, but the FDA recommends not buying them even though no adverse side effects have been reported with these products.

Health care professionals and patients are encouraged to report side effects or quality problems with any medicine to FDA's MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program.

You can complete and submit the report online. Or download and complete the form and fax it to 1-800-FDA-0178.
