Should you wash your jeans? An expert says no!
It was a topic of conversation on the morning show today. And it’s been a conversation on social media for years. Should you or shouldn’t you wash your jeans. Through the years I’ve seen a lot of articles state that you SHOULD NOT wash them, at least not in a conventional manner. Really? Yep.
The Debate
A lot of this dialog was furthered about nine years ago when the Chief Executive Officer of Levi Strauss, Charles Bergh was quoted as saying that you should never wash your jeans.
Last month, Bergh was on CNBC’s Managing Asia show and wanted to clarify his remarks. He said on the show “I never said don’t wash your jeans”. He went on to say that he doesn’t use a washing machine to clean his denim “True denim heads, people that really love their denim, will tell you to never put your denim into a washing machine. So that’s what I do”.
The folks that love denim will tell you that washing jeans in the washing machine will impact their shape and color. Keeping them unwashed will improve their appearance through creases and exposure to the elements. Not washing them will prevent the denim’s fibers from wearing out, you might develop holes or rips.
How To Wash Your Jeans
Now, it’s not to say that Bergh doesn’t just get his jeans all messy and dirty and leaves them that way. Here’s what he says he does. He’ll spot clean them if they need it. If they really become intolerable, he leaves them on, gets in the shower and covers them with soap, just as you would if you were washing your body.
Burgh also points out that washing jeans, and clothes in general could be good for the environment, especially since our, often synthetic clothes these days release microplastics when washed, contributing to plastic pollution.
So there you go, if you want to reduce your plastic pollution carbon footprint, don’t put those jeans in the washer.

Did you know that there is a difference between a consignment store and a thrift store?
A consignment store and a thrift store are similar in that they both sell used goods. There is a key difference in how they operate.
A consignment store is when individuals bring in items for the store to sell for them. A thrift store is when the store sells donated items for a nonprofit organization.
A thrift store is typically run by a nonprofit organization and the proceeds from the sales go towards that organization's mission or cause.
