Several Richmond County Schools Show Gains in 2023 SAT Scores
SAT scores released today by the College Board and the Georgia Department of Education show notable gains in scores at several high schools within the Richmond County School System Class of 2023.
Highlights from the test results include:
- AR Johnson Health Science and Engineering Magnet and Davidson Fine Arts Magnet Schools beat the state average of 1045
- George P. Butler Comprehensive High School, Glenn Hills High School, Hephzibah Comprehensive High School, T.W. Josey Comprehensive High School, and Westside High School went up on the 2023 combined SAT score by an average of 29 points.
- Butler High School and Glenn Hills High School have exceeded their pre-pandemic combined scores
- Butler, Glenn Hills, T.W. Josey, and Westside High Schools increased within their Evidenced Based Reading portion of the SAT
- Butler, Glenn Hills, T.W. Josey, and Westside High Schools increased with the Math portion of the SAT
- T.W. Josey High School had the highest increase of SAT Test Takers and most test-takers in the past six years.
Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Bradshaw said, “The growth that we are seeing in the SAT scores is evidence of the commitment and hard work of our students who accepted the challenge to set high academic goals and came to school every day prepared to learn.”
As for the state of Georgia public school Class of 2023, the mean score was 1045. That means 42 points above the national average of 1003.
The Georgia Class of 2023 posted a mean score of 534 on the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (ERW) portion of the test. With a mean score of 511 on the math component.
Students who are applying to 23 of Georgia’s 26 public universities next year, including Augusta University, won’t be required to take the SAT or ACT college tests to apply.
The Board of Regents voted earlier this year to allow students to apply without the tests through the 2024-2025 academic year. Saying they were advised renewed testing requirements would likely drive students to other colleges. The tests are still required and the University of Georgia and Georgia Tech. Georgia College and State is resuming a testing requirement on an experimental basis, to see how much it affects applications.
