Cross Creek Forfeits Game Friday Following Recent Bench-Clearing Brawl

The Cross Creek High School Football Team will no longer be traveling to Hart County for a scheduled game this Friday night.

The game was scrapped Tuesday when Cross Creek was forced to forfeit the game due to a bench-clearing brawl that broke out last weekend during a game in Savannah.

The Georgia High School Athletic Association investigated the incident and decided Tuesday that both Savannah and Cross Creek high schools would have to forfeit their games this weekend.

A fight broke out between two players in the third quarter, resulting in both teams getting involved in the brawl.  One Savannah coach and a player were injured.  Officials decided to end the game at that point and ask everyone to leave the stadium.  Cross Creek was given the win since they were ahead 28-0 when the game was called.

Cross Creek was supposed to play at Hart County for their homecoming game this Friday, but Bulloch Academy will now be the opposing team instead of Cross Creek.

Last weekend's violence in Savannah wasn't the first such issue for Cross Creek High School.  The home opener game between Butler and Cross Creek high schools was canceled last month in the wake of a brawl at Butler, followed by a shooting at Josey High School.  Coaches at both schools agreed to err on the side of caution and cancel the first game.  It will not be rescheduled.

Friday night was a special one!  It was the 30th anniversary of Border Bash.  It's a night that happens once a year, as the CSRA kicks off the Georgia-South Carolina football rivalry weekend.

Border Bash has raised so much money for children's charities here in the Augusta area throughout the years.  The cheerleaders and mascots from both teams also come and visit the Children'[s Hospital ahead of the event each year.

This year, we not only got to enjoy performances from the Georgia and South Carolina Cheerleaders and Mascots, but we also got to enjoy live music.  Up first, J & The Bootleggers kicked off the night.  Then The Mason Jars kept the crowd going.  And The Mike Veal Band rounded out the night with even more great music.

It was a beautiful night at SRP Park. And quite possibly the coolest temperatures we've seen at a Border Bash in quite a while.

The kids were able to enjoy face painting and bounce houses and slides.  And many were tossing around footballs on the field at SRP Park.  There was also a lot of great food and ice cold beverages to enjoy too.

Unfortunately, this was the last Border Bash.  Early this year, the upcoming schedules for both teams were announced.  Georgia and South Carolina won't be playing each other over the next few years. So, it's a bit bittersweet.

We are thankful for 30 great years of fun and for the money raised for children's charities here in the CSRA.  In honor of the 30th anniversary, the mayors from North Augusta and Augusta issued proclaimations for the teams for their dedication to the event year after year. It was a very special moment!
