Tragic Accident Claims Life of a Wagener-Salley High School Teacher
A tragic accident Wednesday afternoon has claimed the life of a Social Studies teacher at Wagener-Salley High School.
The Aiken County Coroner’s Office says 31-year-old Jeunelle Robinson died yesterday, hours after she was hit by a falling utility pole not far from the school.
Officials say Robinson was walking south on Main Street in Wagener near the Pickens Street intersection around 12:35 pm when a tractor-trailer headed north on Main Street struck some overhead power lines, causing the utility pole to fall on her.
Robinson was rushed to Aiken Regional Medical Centers, then airlifted to Augusta University Medical Center where she died last night.
Wagener-Salley High School officials say the incident triggered a soft lockdown at the school while emergency crews were on the scene. Grief counselors will be available at the school for the rest of the week. After school activities were cancelled yesterday and some others have been cancelled for the rest of the week.
Robinson, who was in her second year of teaching at the school, will be autopsied later today in Newberry.
The Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol are investigating the cause of the accident.
