Suspect in TW Josey High School Shooting Surrenders
The suspect in Wednesday’s shooting at T.W. Josey High School has surrendered to authorities.
The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office has not released the suspect’s name, but said he is a 16-year-old juvenile who was a student at the school. The suspect is accused of shooting another student during an altercation near the cafeteria late yesterday morning. The victim was shot in the finger and is undergoing treatment for non life-threatening injuries.
The suspect fled from the scene. Richmond County Sheriff Richard Roundtree said they knew the identity of the suspect, but were unable to find him. He issued a plea during a news conference for the suspect to turn himself in and he did today. He’s been charged with Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime, Possession of a Handgun under 18 and Carrying Weapon(s) on School Property.
No further information about the suspect is being released at this time.
The shooting incident prompted lockdowns at Josey High School and nearby Murphey Middle School. It also led to Richmond County School District officials to decide to cancel classes for the rest of the week at those schools, in addition to Marion E. Barnes Career Center. Teachers, however, is scheduled to report to work on Friday.
A home football game that was supposed to be play tomorrow night at Josey has been moved to opponent Savannah High School’s field.
