TW Josey High and Two Other Schools Nearby to Remain Closed Until Monday
Following a shooting this morning at T.W. Josey High School that left one student injured, school district officials have made the decision to keep Josey and nearby Murphey Middle School and the Marion E. Barnes Career Center closed until Monday, August 21.
One student was shot in the finger during an altercation late this morning at Josey. The suspect, identified only as a male juvenile student, is still at-large. Richmond County Sheriff Richard Roundtree has asked anyone with information on the student’s whereabouts to contact authorities.
Both Josey and Murphey Middle Schools were on hard lockdown after the shooting. Students at Josey were evacuated and sent to the school’s football stadium where they were picked up by parents or guardians.
Meanwhile, school officials have issued the following statement regarding operations at the affected schools:
“Out of an abundance of caution and to provide students and staff an opportunity to begin to recover from today’s incident, Josey High School, Murphey Middle School, and Marion E. Barnes Career Center will be closed on Thursday, August 17, 2023. Teachers are asked to report on Friday, August 18, while students will remain at home. Normal operations will resume on Monday, August 21, for both students and staff at both schools.
Counselors will be available for students and faculty to address any emotional support needs.
A decision regarding athletics will be made on Thursday.
