Austin: [00:00:00] Yesterday in Atlanta, several district attorneys, including Augusta's own Jared Williams, gathered to announce their opposition to legislation that was passed and a new law that was passed not long ago that attempts to hold district attorneys across the state of Georgia to a certain legal standard. You have to enforce the laws of the land as they are written and passed by the state legislature and signed into law by the governor. That's the way the law operates. The legislature and the governor pass laws. The district attorneys prosecute people who break the laws. It really is that simple.
As a matter of fact, at the beginning of their terms in office, all of those men and women took an oath that they would enforce and prosecute those, enforce the law and prosecute those who break the law. Without favor or exception. That's not what they're saying now.
Now, the DA's all across Georgia and there are some Republicans here as well are saying that they should have discretion as to who should be prosecuted, how they should be prosecuted, and what laws of the land should be ignored.
Jared Williams is flat out announce or certain drug laws he's not going to enforce. He's already excused some incredibly serious crimes, seeing them whittle down to misdemeanors and basically giving criminals a free pass on more than one occasion.
It's bad enough to where the sheriff of Richmond County has had very strong words in private, of course, about Jared Williams' ability to do his job and prosecute criminals.
Folks, the passage of the measure last year that was put in place to hold district attorneys accountable is a useful tool and it should be left alone. It will be interesting to see how this plays out in court. But I can tell you this, DA's that are weak against lawbreakers are DA's that nobody needs. Well, except criminals, of course.
