Good News: Farmer Plants 1 Million Sunflowers

In Kansas, a farmer planted over 1 million sunflowers. And the reason behind it is absolutely precious!

Lee Wilson planted the sunflowers as a 50th wedding anniversary gift for his wife, Renee.  The two have been together since high school.  Knowing that sunflowers are one of her favorite things, he came up with the idea to plant the flowers on 80 acres of land.

With the help of his son, Wilson planted the sunflowers back in May of this year.  And they somehow managed to keep it a secret from Renee.

The couple will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on August 10th.  Hopefully, the sunflowers will still look great then.  But sunflower season is short, lasting around just 2 weeks.

Spring is here! It’s a time of year when things start warming up (for the most part, but this is Georgia after all), and everything is in bloom. It feels like a fresh start.  And it’s a time of year when you may want to do a deep clean inside the house.  But what about your yard?  Maybe you want to spruce up your lawn with some new trees, bushes, and flowers.  And when it comes to gardening in Augusta, we have many great local nurseries to visit for all of your plant needs!

A local nursery is a great place to check out a wide variety of plants, flowers, bushes, and trees.  They can even help you pick out the best options given the space you have in your yard.  And they can also help determine which will be best based on sunlight, watering needs, and maintenance required.  There’s something for everyone wanting to brighten up their yard… even if you aren’t a green thumb!

    Double B Plant Farm is a family-owned nursery with quality shrubs, trees, and more.  They offer wholesale to customers with proper state licenses for live plant purchases. But they also sell to retail customers as well. Their retail area is set up in an all-natural setting and most are planted in established beds so you can see the final product and how it will look.  If they don’t have what you’re looking for, they will try to find it for you.

  • Bedford Greenhouses

  • Wild Oak Farms

    Address: 2850 Jones Chapel Road, Lincolnton, GA

    Wild Oak Farms is NOT open to the public, aside from their Public Sale Days. They are a wholesale tree nursery but do have a variety of plants, trees, and shrubs available on their sale days.  Check out their Facebook to stay up-to-date on their public sale days!

  • Sanderlin Greenhouses

    Address: 2539 Scotts Ferry Road, Appling, GA

    Sanderlin Greenhouses has 38 greenhouses full of beautiful plants, flowers, and more to browse through. They have a wide variety of garden fruits and vegetables available, plus a wide range of flower varieties including begonias, pansies, geraniums, petunias, ferns, and more.

  • Grass Roots Yard Supply Greenhouse and Nursery

    Address: 111 Holly Meadows Drive, Graniteville, SC

    Grass Roots Yard Supply is a greenhouse and nursery with a full-service retail garden center.  They have unique and season plants, mulch, decorative rocks and pavers, and more. Inside their 4500 square feet space, you’ll have home and garden accent items, plus the greenhouse filled with live plants.  With 6 acres of garden center, you can find anything you need for your yard.

  • Cold Creek Nurseries

    Address: 398 Hitchcock Parkway, Aiken, SC

    Cold Creek Nurseries has an extensive nursery and greenhouses with annuals, perennials, trees, shrubs, house plants, and more. The team here will help choose plants that are right for your home and lifestyle. They are one of the largest garden centers in South Carolina. They also have your gardening supplies, home decor, and gifts. In The Market at Cold Creek, you’ll find locally-sourced produce, sauces, jams, dry goods, and more.

     

  • Nurseries Caroliniana

    Nurseries Caroliniana is a family-owned retail garden center in North Augusta. They specialize in rare and unusual plants and flowers. They not only do retail sales at their location, but can also ship plants.  They have a full garden line of fertilizers, chemicals, hardware, ornamental concrete, and pots.  They also offer design service and can arrange for installation.

  • Griffin's Greenhouses

    Address: 4643 Mike Padgett Highway, Augusta, GA

    Griffin’s Greenhouses offers a variety of plants, ferns, hanging baskets, bedding plants, vegetable plants, roses, and more.

  • Trusty Farms

    Address: 1020 Old Jackson Highway, Jackson, SC

    Trusty Farms is just up the road in Jackson, SC. They offer a unique assortment of perennials, aquatics, vines, fruit plants, and more. This is another place that offers shipping!

  • Woodlanders

    Address: 1128 Colleton Avenue, Aiken, SC

    Woodlanders is a nursery that specializes in rare native and exotic plants. They are primarily a mail-order nursery, but plants can be picked up on location if ordered in advance from their website.

  • Good Earth Produce & Garden Center

    Address: 150 Davis Road, Augusta, GA

    Good Earth Produce & Garden Center is an enclosed farmers market that has fresh produce, but also local products, seasonal plant, and more. They have produce and plants that are grown locally.

  • PlantHouse Augusta

    Address: 619 Mullins Colony Drive, Evans, GA

    PlantHouse Augusta isn’t a nursery or greenhouse, but they do offer a variety of plants.  Plus, you have to check out their terrarium workshops!
