Suspect Dead after Police Chase on I-20 in Aiken County

A police chase and shooting had westbound lanes of I-20 in Aiken County blocked tonight near mile marker 9.

Captain Eric Abdullah with the Aiken County Sheriff's Office says the incident started earlier today when the suspect barricaded himself in a vehicle.  A police chase began around 7:30 pm with the suspect reportedly firing shots at law enforcement.

Authorities performed a PIT maneuver to stop the suspect and the vehicle reportedly wound up on the shoulder of the interstate. The South Carolina Highway Patrol says the suspect was barricaded in the vehicle for a short time before authorities found him dead at 8:30 pm.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has been called to investigate.  Investigators say no shots were fired by deputies pursuing the suspect.

Multiple exits were blocked and traffic was rerouted while authorities were on the scene.
