The 2023-2024 school year begins soon in the CSRA.  Students in McDuffie County head back to classroom August 3.

In preparation for students' return to the classroom, emergency response personnel in McDuffie County will be participating in active shooter training sessions this Tuesday and Thursday, July 18 and July 20 at an unnamed Thomson school.

Thomson Police Chief Courtney Gale said activities will last about eight hours each day.

"During that time, residents will see an increased number of police and fire vehicles in the area, and may hear loud noises as the training occurs," said Gale.

The training sessions are not expected to impact traffic or services in the area.

"This training allows area departments to respond and train together and work through any challenges presented.  We hope we never have to respond to such a situation, but we want to be absolutely prepared if it ever does happen," said Gale.
