Shutterstock ImageA record-breaking number of travelers is expected this Fourth of July weekend! with Nearly 51 million Americans expected to travel 50 miles or more from their home this weekend, according to AAA that would surpass the 2019 July 4th weekend record of 49 million travelers.
Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has suspended lane closures statewide for peak travel during this upcoming holiday weekend. They have even shared the best and worst days to travel for the upcoming 4th of July holiday.
What days will have the lightest traffic?
According to GDOT, Sunday, July 2 through Tuesday, July 4 will have the lightest traffic.
What days will have the worst traffic?
GDOT expects the “worst” traffic on the interstates to be Friday, June 30 starting at around noon. Travelers should expect to add 30 to 45 minutes to their trip. The best travel times are expected to be before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m.
According to a GDOT press release , these are the major interstates outside of Metro Atlanta:
• I-20: Eastbound congestion is expected when entering metro Atlanta, while westbound congestion is predicted when exiting the city towards Alabama.
• I-75: Heavy congestion anticipated in both southbound and northbound directions coming out of Atlanta in Stockbridge causing congestion on I-675 as well.
• I-24: Eastbound congestion us expected in Northwest Georgia near Chattanooga.
• I-59: Northbound congestion is projected when entering Tennessee, and southbound congestion is anticipated when entering Georgia.
• I-475: Congestion is anticipated in both northbound and southbound directions in Macon.
• I-16: Westbound congestion is expected when exiting Savannah, and eastbound congestion is predicted when entering Savannah.
