Gold Cross is providing ambulance service to Richmond County again....for the time being.

One day after Augusta Commissioners failed to reach a contract with the company, an emergency meeting was held Wednesday to approve a month-to-month deal with Gold Cross to ensure there was no gap in service while officials look for a new provider.

The temporary deal with Gold Cross will cost an initial $250,000 at first, then $150,000 a month after that.

City officials say the temporary deal will expire when a new ambulance provider has been designated by the state.

On Tuesday, Commissioners voted against signing a new deal with Gold Cross.  Some were not in favor of paying the subsidies Gold Cross was asking for to account for an increase in operating costs as well as the number of patients who don't pay for services.

The Georgia Department of Public Health has confirmed that Gold Cross will no longer be the official zone provider for ambulance services for Augusta as of January 31 at 11:59 p.m.   Officials say there will be a 10-day window for applications to be accepted from others who want to become the zone provider.
